Kitchen Renovation – Replacing the Floor,
one Step at a Time
When handling a big kitchen renovation project like replacing the
floor, it is best to take things one step at a time. Even then,
most do-it-yourselfers find it necessary to acquire the services
of a qualified professional.
First Things First
Before acquiring the services of an experienced flooring contractor
or beginning the kitchen floor renovation project yourself, consider
the following: if the existing flooring is in good repair, you might
be able to install new flooring directly over it. This can save time,
energy, and money. But how can you know for sure whether or
not old flooring can stay put? Use the helpful guidelines below
to determine what works best with which type flooring.
Vinyl Tile or Sheet
Many kitchens in and around the Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary
areas have vinyl tile or sheet goods. This is a plus; nearly all
new flooring can be installed over vinyl that is still in good condition
– unless it has a pronounced texture, or is cushioned. Pronounced
texture will eventually show through new sheet goods. Placing new
vinyl flooring over cushioned flooring that can flex risks breaking
the adhesive bond.
Ceramic Tile
New nailed-down wood strips cannot be installed over ceramic tile;
the old tile will have to be removed. New vinyl sheet goods cannot
be stapled to ceramic tile; if old tile is left in place, use vinyl
flooring adhesive.

New ceramic tile can be installed over
old tile, as long as the old tile is strong and in good repair.
The surface area of the old tile floor should be level. If not,
apply latex underlayment to the entire surface, then sand smooth.
Wood Flooring
As long as the old wood flooring is completely flat and in good
repair, any type of new flooring can be installed over it. First,
fill cracks and holes with wood filler; sand smooth. Wood floors
with V-grooves should be filled with latex underlayment before sanding.
Nail down loose areas of the old flooring. If using glue to install
new flooring, use medium-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface of
the old wood flooring for better adhesion.
Carpet
Regardless of condition, carpet and padding must be removed before
installing any type new flooring.
Concrete Slabs
Acquire the services of a professional flooring contractor to determine
the condition of your slab, and what provision might be necessary
before installing new flooring.
