The following documents are intended to provide general information and guidance into provincial contractor licensing requirements. Because licensing requirements change it is important that you check with both your provincial and local municipal office to verify if any updates have been made or additional licenses are required.

Alberta Contractor License Requirements To work in many trades in Alberta a Certification of Qualification (C of Q) is needed especially for work around electricity, water, drainage, natural gas and heating and air conditioning systems. For a renovator, including kitchens and bathrooms, a contractor’s license in Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. |

British Columbia Contractor License Requirements
The province of British Columbia requires licensing for many aspects of home building including the structure and renovating a building or residence. The Homeowner Protection Act of British Columbia is a set or rules for builder licensing established and regulated by the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO). This includes building in the large cities such as Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, B.C. |

Manitoba Contractor License Requirements In Manitoba Certificates of Qualification (C of Q) care required by the government for most trades. Electricians, however, must have the C of Q and be licensed. Other classifications pertain to gas fitters and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics. Kitchen and bathroom renovations require gas fitters where natural gas supplies the appliances. Most occupations can be transferred to other provinces under the “Red Seal” classification. |

New Brunswick Contractor License Requirements
Like many other provinces in Canada the New Brunswick government does not require licenses for most of the trades. However, Certificates of Qualification (C of Q) care required by the government of New Brunswick for most trades in the province. Electricians, pressure gas workers and plumbers require licensing. |

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador does not require licensing however the government encourages trades people to get Certificates of Qualification (C of Q) in their area of expertise. Nova Scotia Contractor License Requirements
Like many other provinces in Canada the Nova Scotia government does not require licenses for most of the trades. However, Certificates of Qualification are required by the Nova Scotia Labour and Workforce Development, under their Apprenticeship Training and Skill Development Division. Gas fitters require licenses because they are dealing with pressurized propane and natural gas. So a licensed gas fitter is needed for kitchen renovations. |

Ontario Contractor License Requirements
The province of Ontario requires licensing for many aspects of the building trade but it is in the large cities where the requirements differ. For example in Toronto a license is needed for insulators. Roofers, waterproofers and building contractors whereas Hamilton requires a license for building maintenance. Prince Edward Island Contractor License Requirements The province of Prince Edward Island does not require licensing for many aspects of home building. However electricians and plumbers must hold licenses to work this trade on the island. The government of PEI is also encouraging other trades like roofers and flooring installers to get a certification so that they can be able to work in other provinces with such standards. This is called a “Red Seal” endorsement. |

Quebec Contractor License Requirements
In Quebec a general contractor doing either commercial or residential work have an RBQ license. This applies to electricians, gas fitters, plumbers and refrigeration mechanics. A general contractors license also shows that the contractor has acquired business skills. This includes paying suppliers, sub-trades, labourers and permits fees. In addition they can oversee a residential, commercial or industrial project depending on the license granted. |

Saskatchewan Contractor License Requirements
In Saskatchewan an electrician must be licensed however Certificates of Qualification (C of Q) are required by the government for most trades. Plumbers, however, must have a gasfitters license to work on kitchen and bathroom appliances and heaters. This is because kitchen and bathroom renovations require gas fitters for natural gas supplies to appliances like stoves and tankless water heaters. |
