What is a cost effective and way to finish basement stairs? We have put a laminate flooring in the basement, the stairs are just rough and too rough to paint, we would like to finish them with a wood finish and a white riser.

Can you put laminate on the stairs and what would be a suggestion for the riser?

Thanks

Buy a good sander, and you can apply 3-4 coats of thick paint or varnish, sand again and apply 2 more coats.

Do not use laminate on the treads, it is not made for the scuffing motion of feet and will wear very fast.

Another option is thin carpet in the center area (24" wide) and paint on the sides.
