Moving Attic Roof Beams

I currently own a house built in 1893 and have a full size attic that I want to convert into a master bedroom. The ceiling beams are currently 6'6" from the floor and I want to know if or how much I can have the beams raised before i have the electircal, drywall and finishing added.

The beams are called collor ties, and they keep the peak of your roof from falling down. They can be moved or even eliminated, but a structural engineer will have to make that determination.

Collar ties are designed to tie together the tops of opposing rafters. This helps brace the roof framing against uplift caused by wind. Collar ties must be placed in the upper third of the roof. Collar ties, contrary to popular belief, do not prevent walls from spreading.

I would agree with getting a structural engineer out to tell you exactly what can be done. Be sure that the insulation is done properly with baffles right up to the roof for proper roof venting. I would also recommend installing a strip of ridge venting as well.
