Enlargeing your garage opens up a number of questions. Do you have room without encroaching on the sideyard requirements. Is the garage on a slab or grade beam and are the trusses on the garage running parallel or perpendicular to the side that is being extended.

Extending the concrete would be the same in each case. Trusses parallel is easiest, involving moving the end wall complete with gable out to the edge of the new foundation and adding new sections of wall and trusses in the gap. Trusses pependicular would require a girder truss or trusses with hangers to support the existing trusses, the wall moved out and a new gable added to the extended side.

Of course now we have to replace shingles and match siding and soffit. The cost of this project would be prohibitive for a couple of feet. Increaseing the footage would add greatly to this project and reduce the the cost per foot.

At this point you should enlist the services of a designer.

I beleive your best idea would be to call general contractor. Normally you do not "extend width" for garages.

Hi Greg,

Depending on what end end of the garage you would like to increase would affect the overall cost and complexity of the job. If you want to add to the front where the large garage doors are it could be difficult if your not planning on using the old overhead doors. Otherwise it should be fairly straight forward, new footings some framing and exterior and interior finishes, you would likely have to get a permit for this job as you will be needing some new foundation work.

Hope this helps you with planning your new project.

Thanks for all your responses.

To clarify I was trying to widen the garage so we could open the doors of the cars easier. the length of the garage is fine.

The extension to the left side of this garage is what i am looking for. I am looking at moving the footings or just a push-out so the car doors can open up.
