I am in the process of developing my basement into an apartment. Is it code to have subfloor and to use RC channel in the ceilings to accept drywall or can I use strapping?

I am hearing different opinions on this subject.

There is nothing structural you need to do. Running strapping for you to screw drywall is completely acceptable.

Hi There,

To have sub floor or not, it dos't comply with building code one way or the other. Ceiling is completely different situation, ceiling has to be fire rated, this was not the case prier local governments approving single family residence in to two family residence, most of municipalities past the bylaw on this subject.

To install sub floor is beneficial for home owners and for the tenants as well, id done properly moisture is eliminated and the basement is warmer and the staled air and bad smell is eliminated.

Hi There,

People might have different Ideas but the point is that you do not need any Rc Channels. You will be fine with just installing right under ceiling joist.

Sub flooring in current floor in basement is up to Code as well. Even though there is no need to install one as long as current floor is levelled. For instance if you install laminate or ceramic, make sure you don't need self level.

Hello ! my name is David I am a general contractor.

The sub floor is a good idea for comfort but not code that I know of.

If you are getting a building permit then yes the city will require a fire separation and that is what the RC
channel provide, along with 2 layers of 5/8 drywall. This also helps with soundproofing.
