If you have a home with a gravel driveway consider getting it paved, asphalt paving is the way to go.  For new construction or for your existing home, putting down asphalt will save you money and make things much neater and cleaner.

Paved DrivewayWhy has asphalt paving become such a popular alternative to concrete? The main reason is due to its durability and flexibility. It can withstand abuse from the weather and punishment from heavy objects. Yet it still has the ability to move, shift, and adjust as it constantly adapts to the outdoor elements.   Asphalt can also be decorative and it doesn't have to be black.  It can be stamped like concrete to look like brick pavers or even cobblestones in any color.  It can also be formed into different designs or mosaics.

Asphalt paving is actually a bunch of tiny rocks, fine sand, and asphalt cement which becomes a liquid when hot gluing it all together. When the mixture is put down it is thick tar, which is why the final result is usually black in color.  This chemical construction also makes it extremely flexible, in all sorts of ways, making it perfect for driveways, sports courts, and around the garage.

Asphalt is an excellent choice if you're looking for a long lasting, functional surface. It's cheaper than concrete, resists frost and cracking better than concrete does, is less prone to damage from salts and ice melt in colder climates, and it dries faster so you can use your driveway sooner after an asphalt paving installation. About the only downside of asphalt is that is does require some routine maintenance. In order to ensure the longest life possible for your surface, you'll need to re-seal your driveway regularly.

Site preparation is the most difficult part about installing an asphalt driveway. You'll definitely need a specialist since it takes special heavy equipment and knowledge to complete the installation. When looking for your contractor, make sure you specify any special requirements the contractors need to know about, like the size of the project, the steepness of the grading, or any unique areas they'll need to work around like wheelchair ramps, curbs, or stairs.  Your asphalt could last up to 30 years making it a worthwhile investment.

Asphalt paving can be added over existing asphalt but if you are replacing concrete, the first step is to remove the concrete which can be sold and recycled into other construction projects.  Next the contractor will strip any vegetation, excavate the area to the required depth, and compact the soil.

The next phase of your asphalt project is the putting down of a gravel base of about 8 inches.  You can use an asphalt base that uses larger, sturdier stones in this mixture create a strong foundational groundwork but that will be more expensive.  For most applications the 8 inches of gravel is enough of a base.

Finally, they'll apply two inches of hot liquid paving and let it dry for a couple of days and you have your new driveway or sport court!
