Stucco and plaster are very similar substances and the main difference has been the areas in which they were used; plaster being used primarily indoors and stucco outdoors. Today stucco is essentially Portland cement plaster spread over a metal lath. It is used to cover up other, not so appealing, wall covering such as concrete, cinder block, clay brick and adobe.
Stucco is made from a mixture of Portland cement, sand and water, and lime is usually also added to this mixture to make it more workable. In addition aggregate and pigments may be added to change the color of the stucco so that it does not need to be painted.
In order to apply modern stucco a wire mesh is first of all attached to tar paper to protect the wall and give the plaster something to attach to. The wire lath may be expanded-metal, woven wire or welded wire. To this is added two layers of Portland-cement plaster.
Stucco is a relatively low-cost covering that is also rot, rust and fire resistant. It can come in a number of different colors, form different textures and be used to create a range of different styles and finishes to appeal to the homeowner. It is also durable and lasting.
If you want to use stucco in your home then it is best to call a contractor to do it for you. You can find contractors by searching in the HandyCanadian.com directory or by posting a project to our website. The contractor you hire should be familiar with the Stucco application standards that are put out by the American Society for Testing and Materials, and the Canadian Standards Association.
