Whether you are having new kitchen cabinets put in, a built in constructed, or a new hardwood floor in your kitchen or great room, you will want to make sure you get a quality staining and finishing job done.
Kitchens remodels, bathroom renovations, home additions, and new construction all have a need for a quality staining and finishing contractor. Staining and finishing is found in nearly every home. Wood wrapped windows, railings, flooring, trim, cabinets, built-ins, even a lot of different types of furniture are stained and finished.
While installation of your wood cabinets and floors is also very important, the staining and finishing aspect will make or break the project. The last thing you want as a homeowner is a poor finish in your home. Stain drips or runs ruin the look and need to be repaired.
Many people have tried to refinish furniture and have some experience with applying stain and finish on wood. Your home is very different and you want to make sure you leave the staining and finishing to a professional contractor or general contractor.
Floors can be especially tricky for several reasons. First there is the fact that a floor is a flat surface so the amount of stain and finish used needs to be carefully regulated. Secondly the absorption rate of the wood will depend on the specific variety of the flooring and how dry it is before being installed. A professional contractor will take all of these factors into account before applying stain.
After the stain has been put down it is important that the surface is allowed to properly dry. External heat sources may need to be applied to ensure an even, complete drying of the surface is achieved. Once the stain has dried some final sanding can be done to ensure the surface is completely smooth and ready for the clear coats.
Clear coats are essentially covering of the stained wood to protect the area from additional staining and also to add brilliance. You can choose different types of finishing clear coats to achieve different looks. The different types are flat, stain, and gloss which is the shiniest.
An important step is to sand between the staining and each of the clear coats. The fine sanding works in the different layers of finish coating and prepares each surface for the next coating. Generally the more layers of finish coats you put on the deeper the level of shine achieved on the surface depending on the type of finish you have chosen.
