Baby Proofing Your Home

When building your new home or remodeling your existing structure were you considering that you might have some little feet around?  Most people without kids or who have older kids can easily forget about the hazards in your home that will affect young kids.  It’s doesn’t take a lot of money or much time to make sure your home is safe for young children.

As babies become more mobile, exploration becomes the name of the game.  Children are naturally curious. Tasting, touching and feeling are how infants and toddlers learn about the world around them.  With age and maturing comes curiosity, how does this work?  What happens when I pull on this?

Look at the world from a baby’s perspective

Getting down on your hands and knees will give you an excellent idea on the perspective a child will have looking at your home.  From the floor, your baby's view may be different from yours. Crawl from room to room and find any small or fragile objects at eye level that may fit in a child’s mouth and pose a choking hazard.  Look for small screws or nails, nuts, grapes, buttons, pen caps and any other stray items that may have fallen on the floor or under your furniture.

Babies tend to pull and grab at any cord or string they can reach so you need to keep electrical cords, telephone wires, and window-blind cords tied up and inaccessible to babies, toddlers, and you ones.  This is especially true of any cords near the bed or crib.

Make sure to move wobbly tables or other pieces of furniture that might tip over if your baby uses them to stand up. Also be sure to check bookcases or any other potentially unstable furniture or shelving that is on all wall.  If it can be secured make sure it is strongly attached to the wall.  If it cannot be attached securely, move it out of the range of your child or remove it completely.

Make sure on your crawl around that you pull on doors, cabinets, and drawers.  You can inexpensively purchase safety locks and latches for kitchen and bathroom cabinets and drawers can help prevent poisonings and other injuries.  Safety gates are a necessity if you have stairs as they can help prevent tumbles and falls.  Some rooms are just not a good idea for kids to go in and you can make the room off limits with a child proof door knob cover.  Door knob covers and door locks can also keep kids out of dangerous areas like where you have your swimming pool or spa.

Make sure you have your hot water heater set on a safe setting so your hot water isn’t scalding and keep all outlets covered and protected.  Keeping windows and doors locked is the best policy.  You can also buy safety netting to help prevent falls from windows, balconies, decks and landings.

While it is not possible to remove every hazard to children in your home, by taking affordable, quick steps, you can make your home much safer for babies, toddlers, and young children.
