Hell-hole now a paradise
It was with interest I read the recent letter to the editor from a Cambridge resident who had been burned by a contractor.
My husband Dave and I have story to offer from the opposite end of the spectrum.
A year ago, we decided to have our hell-hole of a basement refinished, and called six contractors for quotes and ideas. For the most part, we were impressed by them all, though some quotes were astronomical compared to others.
We narrowed it down to two companies, both of whom had solid reputations, glowing references and who seemed truly eager to earn our business. Each referred us to websites, made arrangements for us to view basements they had completed, and provided Dave and I with DVDs of their company’s showcase of renos.
I don’t imagine we gave them an easy time of it, as I am a HGTV junkie, and believe I have learned what to ask and what to watch out for (thanks Mike Holmes, as irritating as you are, I did listen).
In the end, we decided a Cambridge-based contractor would earn our business.
It is a great pity that I have put off writing our praise and offering our applause to Suzette and her team. She was focused, diligent, no-nonsense, fun, respected by her tradesmen, on budget, able to troubleshoot, offered opinions, lent a listening ear, was organized, punctual and precise.
She delivered far more than we expected.
We were left with a stunningly beautifully finished basement, which included an office, family room, three-piece bathroom and nice-sized fourth bedroom. The transformation of dungeon to paradise was a joy to witness and behold.
She is a contractor I can recommend whole-heartedly and a woman we can now call friend. I actually miss her daily “intrusion” into our lives.

| We write this letter to express our sincere gratitude and overwhelming satisfaction with Suzette Mariz, Owner/Manager at Germano Creative Interior Contracting Ltd. Last year my wife and I contacted Suzette to begin the process of remodeling our basement. I must admit having worked with a couple contractors in the past, my wife and I were apprehensive about hiring a contractor to complete our basement due to our previous experiences, which to say the least had been from ‘minimally satisfactory’ to a ‘serious nightmare’. Albeit, in light of all these factors, we decided to engage the services of Germano Creative Interior Contracting.
There were several reasons why we selected “Germano Creative Interior Contracting Ltd”:
We contacted Suzette through the yellow pages. We received an immediate response within 24 hours and set up an appointment the very next day for an evaluation. She demonstrated a stupendous level of professionalism, experience, creative intuition, consultative approach, meticulous attention to detail and ability to address our wants and needs precisely than any of the other contractors, and assisted us to visualize what was going to happen in great detail, including reviewing with us every detail of the project.
We requested from numerous contractors to provide us with an estimate, some of which did not make any attempt to visit our home – but simply assumed they knew what we expected over the telephone; knew what our space looked like; knew our ideas/suggestions; and determined their price as such.
One contractor who visited our home had many ideas of how our renovation should look like, our ideas didn’t matter.
She provided us with a comprehensive / detailed proposal and contract, which we never received from two previous basement remodeling experiences with two (2) different contractors. Furthermore, prior to commencement of the project, Suzette supplied an outline of the project schedule, which gave us an appreciation of what type of work was going to be performed on a weekly basis.
Here are a few of the things that impressed us most about our experience with Suzette at Germano Creative Interior Contracting Ltd.:
Owner/Manager: Suzette was always available to ensure that the job went smoothly and all of our questions and concerns were always given her immediate attention, and she always made us feel our home was her number one priority. And she was reassuring throughout the project and was always proactive and presented mitigation strategies for our consideration whenever we encountered issues. Suzette and her team gave a 1000% to our project while remaining personable and professional, making our entire building project enjoyable. She and her team are gifted craftsmen with a passion for excellence that is matched only by a deep respect for their clients' vision. Suzette makes a standard operating procedure to prioritize our design needs in the most cost-effective way possible without ever sacrificing on quality.
Integrity: Obviously honesty and integrity are things that you pride yourself on. Every promise made was a promise kept. Suzette was transparent with us about any potential issues that we would encounter in undertaking an extensive renovation of a basement.
The cost of the project was what Suzette stated in the contract, and had said it would be. During the process, we requested additions to the scope of work, and opted to pay extra for extra work and materials. At every step, Suzette advised us about additional costs for additional work and made sure we wanted, understood and agreed to every addition.
Employees/workmanship: The workers were always courteous and most importantly prompt. When Suzette mentioned that a tradesman would be at our place at a specific time, he was here at that time. From the initial framing to the finishing paint all work was done expertly. It is refreshing to see people take pride in their work and that is what her employees did.
Responsiveness: Throughout all the aspects of the project life cycle, we kept abreast of the progress on a daily basis via e-mail and telephone to ensure our total satisfaction.
Timeliness: The project was finished significantly before the projected date. Suzette and we had numerous discussions after the work was substantially complete, and made sure that everything was exactly the way we expected it.
Cleanliness: Suzette and her workers showed concern for keeping the disruptions to our home to a minimum and kept our home and “the work area” always tidy, safe and livable despite the extensive nature of the project, and when the job was completed the work site was thoroughly cleaned for the final presentation.
If we had to rate Suzette and her company, and quality of work she would most assuredly receive 5 out of 5 stars in all categories. Working with Suzette at Germano Creative Interior Contracting Ltd. was a joy. The whole process was smooth, on time, on target, and on budget. “In fact, we wish to thank Suzette for being so diligent during this very long and arduous procedure”. In summary, be assured that if we had to do it all over again we would not hesitate to hire Germano Creative Interior Contracting Ltd. It is with great pleasure that we highly recommend Suzette to all of our family and friends.
