A Helpful Handyman Ltd - located in Abbotsford
Review Posted by Tobey
Eric came out and did renovations at our spa last year. He was very professional, courteous, and efficient. He found ways to cut costs, and had design input. Without him, our renovation would have been a disaster! I have recommended A Helpful Handyman many times, and will continue to do so in the future. Thank you!!!
Red Hill Renovations - located in Abbotsford
Review Posted by Karen
We hired Steve at Red Hill Renovations to do some work on the outside of our older house in Chilliwack. It needed repaired and/or replaced cedar siding to match the old. Painting, new soffits, tear down an existing enclosed porch, and railings. We were not on the scene except for the original walk-thru with Steve as we live out of province and this is a rental property. He was great! He would send us pictures as he finished each project and responded by internet to any questions and comments we had very promptly. He finished on budget and on time. We will definitely use his skills and expertise again when more work needs doing. A true professional!

Steve did an excellent job. It started as small job with a couple sheets drywall but then he ended up doing my whole basement. He had some cost saving ideas and suggestion sduring the process. I felt comfortable with him having a key and working while I was away. I would not hesitate to recommend him and will be hiring him for any future projects I have.

Ground level plank deck
Our home exits through double doors onto a concrete deck beneath the deck above. The concrete slab is about 21' wide by 9' deep. The pad has settled so it pulls away from the side of the house about 3/4" and has sunk about 2" at the side 9' from the house. There are cracks in the slab radiating from the concrete pillars which support the posts for the upper deck (where we can see the slab has sunk at least 2"). At the house the concrete is about an inch below the vinyl siding and the doors sill sits about 2 1/2" above the concrete. We have a water tap at the (weather protected) corner of this wall.
We would like to build a plank deck with either vinyl planking, cedar, or treated lumber to replace this concrete, extending the deck 4' or 5' into the yard.. I need to know if I should remove the concrete and tamp in a gravel base beneath the deck, or can I build the deck directly over the existing slab. Would it be wise to pour a new concrete slab beneath the deck. Can the deck surface be above the bottom of the vinyl siding? Could/should a gap be left between the decking and the wall? How would I attach the deck to concrete if the slab is left in place?
Thank you.

Hi Barrie. I agree with Jim. I think if you leave the concrete in place you will have more problems to deal with then if you removed it and started new. We all know of someone who covered something up because they thought it would be easier. When you do decide to make a change starting with a nice clean area is always easier! Hi Pamela: First off, let me welcome you to the west coast. I can tell by your somments, that you are having a bit of a shock. The lower mainland is going through a building spurt and that is why some of the prices are seeming to be unrealistic. True the land values are higher than what we are experiencing, and the location is driving up prices. However, I wasn't aware that the valley was competing with certain areas closer to Vancouver. If you check out our website the two houses primarily featured run in the $175 to $200 per foot maximum range. they both are hardiplank with cedar accents, have hand built custom cupoards, hardwood floors and in some areas heated tile flooring. I would imagine that with the demand to apy even $225 to 250 for our comparable homes would be a stretch. the one rancher that is featured is situated on 2 1/2 mountain and ocean view acres, is 2200 sq ft with a 700 sq ft garage and is priced at $624,900 including H.S.T. People do pay a high premium to live on the mainland. I hope that this helps you out. Unfortunately, you are at the mercy of a fast moving economy. Chuck
