This contractor is the most dishonest person I have had to deal with. He is unreliable, a cheat and steals money from honest hardworking people. He took our deposit way back in December, hasn't shown up, or had the courtesy to return calls. Supposedly hired a Paralegal to refund our money, it has been 4 months and no sign or contact todate. Do not trust this man or his work, He has no conscience. I know three other friends he has cheated at the same time. DO NOT PAY HIM IN ADVANCE - HE WILL JUST POCKET THE MONEY AND CHEAT YOU.

I live in an apartment and it felt like a bachelor and I want to change the look and feel of it. A friend referred Marlon who came and worked on my unit and turned it into a urban chic unit. I was very pleased with timeline, outcome and the affordability. Thanks alot! I would certainly recommend him to my circle of friends.

If you want to hire someone who is completely incompetent and will steal your money, Mr Calderone is the man. Currently he owes approx. $150,000 to various people (including Revenue Canada) due to Judgments against him. Its always the same story with Carlo: low quote, starts the job, collects some payments, never shows up again. Stay far away from this man!!!

How to find a contractor to raise a cottage
We have a cottage that was is sitting on the ground. The foundation due to moisture is starting to rot in places. We need to raise the cottage to repair the damage and build supports under it. How do I go about finding a contractor to do this type of work?

The Latest Reply

Hi Tammy, Well going through your Handy Canadian directory would be the first place to start, if that fails try using Google, BING etc... type in what your looking for ie: house lifting or house moving or rot repair contractor ( type in your location) are usually good places to start. Then use the Hartwig Builders contractor check list.. P.I.R.Q : Portfolio: past work pic.s , Insurance: ask if the company has the necessary insurance, References: and affiliations with other companies that they are with and their standings ,and lastly Questions: ask questions big or small to make you feel comfortable and secure with your project and contractor. Listing your main concerns in order of importance for you ie: Quality, Price, Time Constraints etc.. and make sure that you are comfortable and understand your contract. Remember it's YOUR project and YOUR the boss ....so be informed as much as possible, communication is paramount for any successful renovation/project so you fully understand and are comfortable with your renovation/project. Hope I've helped. Thank You Wycliff Hartwig Hartwig Builders

Lintel
Replacing a basement window. If the original builders steel window frame is removed do I need to insert a lintel before insertinga new casement window? The window is approx 14 inches by 30 inches. The basement walls are poor concrete and the house is 25 years old. The basement window is directly under a kitchen window which has a lintel. Thanks

Hi David, The lintel transfers the load above to the sides of the opening, letting it continue to the footings and ultimately the ground below. Most basement windows are located at the very top of the foundation, often with the tops of the windows exposed and flush with the top of the foundation. If your house is wood framed, then you will require a wood lintel above the opening which should already be there since there is an existing basement window you are replacing. If you are enlarging the window (i.e. for a basement bedroom egress window) then you must open up the framing above to install the larger lintel. DO NOT compromise the bearing points of the lintel even if it seems like a lot of work for only a couple of inches. In most cases this can be done with very little trouble from the basement. Second issue is brick. Regardless of whether your house is a wood framed structure with the proper wood lintel above, if you have brick veneer, that load must also be transferred as the brick veneer sits 1" outside the wood framed structure. This is done with pre-primed angle iron. The specific dimensions should be determined by what it is carrying (i.e. stone or brick (concrete or clay) etc.). These are installed internally, meaning with the 3 1/2" flange holding the brick and the taller flange (which resists deflection) inserted into the air space behind the brick or stone. Try to get 6" of bearing on either side of the opening. Having said this, unless you are enlarging the window opening, these should remain unaffected by changing the window and you may not have to change anything. Good luck.
