Kitchen chairs
Hi, I hope someone can help me out. I want to paint my kitchen chair to dark espresso colour. I just don't know what kind of paint should I buy it. The chairs is a factory painted (bought from Sears a few years ago), light beige color, wood. I don't want to send them, just repaint them with a very sturdy paint if I can. Many thanks for any suggestion?? Amy

Hi Amy, About 90% of a good paint job on anything is the prep work. You need to ensure that the chairs are cleaned and most or all of the gloss is removed. This doesn't necessarily mean a full sanding down to bare wood but it does mean going over every area of the chair with a light sanding to remove any residue from hands or food. Since you are painting, you could probable use 120 or 150 grit sandpaper - available at any box store. This should provide a good enough surface to accept the paint. You could try any good quality "paint and primer" combo but the best bet would be to go into a good paint store and ask questions about durability and application requirements. Then you just follow the instructions provided. Sounds like a fun project! Good luck with it. Jim Kuzma Kettleby Handyman Services

Wood finishing
Hi, I am finishing a Ikea chair it look like yelowish teak clolor. . My goal is a dark brow- black color with stain. I sanded, put several coat minwax stain and I think is dry, after 4 days (still feels like a little sticky). My poroblem is what kind of varnish shoulld I put on? I saw a wipe on Poly in satin or somthing other finish?? I used oil base minwax stain. Also should I steel wooling before the finishing coat again?? Please give me some adivise, I am stuck. Thanks you very much, Amy

There are a lot of possible causes. However I would suggest starting from scratch. Sand the chair down to bare wood. Make sure the original finish is gone completely. Finish sanding with 150 grit. Take a damp cloth and wipe down the entire chair. This raises the grain and allows the stain to penetrate evenly. You don't want it dripping, but should feel and look damp. Then apply your stain over the entire chair. Don't be stingy you want it to stay wet until you have covered the entire chair. By the time you have covered everything you can take a clean rag and lightly wipe the stain off from were you started. Let it dry 1-2 days. For an easy top coat wipe on poly works great, you have no brush strokes, it just takes a lot more thin coats. It doesn't go on thick and more thin coats are better than thick ones. If after 2 or 3 coats of the wipe on poly, it feels rough, then you can lighty sand with 220 or steel wool. Then more coats of the poly to finish.
