Project Description:
I have a 20 year old house and I have just noticed that I have a crack approximately 1/4 Inch wide from the top of my basement wall right down to the foundation. The crack is following the cement blocks in a staircase style. Luckily enough I have NO water coming in but this just could be a matter of time. I don't know yet if the blocks are cracked on the outside or not. My basement walls are not finished yet so you can access to the wall. I also have cracked parging on the outside of the house that need repairs. The house is 1/2 way finished with bricks and a small crack in the mortar is also visible and would need fixing. I'm looking for some estimates as to what would be the best solutions to get those problems rectified. Thank you!

Interior chimney wall deterioration
We live in a 100 year old home with a fireplace and chimney from main floor up through second floor. On the second floor in one of the bedrooms the chimney wall is covered with plaster and painted. At at one time was in excellent repair. In 2003 we replaced the old FAG furnance with a new energy efficient one. The old furnace was vented through the chimney - the new furnace is newly vented out the side foundation through a pipe. The chimney is no longer heated and therefore is quite cold and condensation forms on the inside wall in the bedroom and is staining and lifting the plaster and paint off the covering of the chimney wall. We have checked that the chimney/roof around it is not leaking and we have actually capped the chimney as we are currently not using the fireplace, the attic above is dry - so we are confident that it is not water coming from outside. What can we do to remedy this situation?

I would agree with Jim; however I have had many calls in this field, and if you box in the chimney this leaves humidity, and sweat. With Clay brick it is worse; If you cut in a few Metal Vents to allow the chimney to breath from the outside this will help more then you would think.

cracking cement floor/walls
I live in a new house and since the cold the house is cracking where the ceiling meets the wall, and actually pulling the tape apart. Also the last few weeks I here cracking throughout the floor and today it was all over the kitchen, I thought the floor was caving in. The ceramic has not cracked but when you step on certain tiles you can tell that the cement board is cracked. There is no insulation under the floor and there is an unfinished basement. The foundation has not cracked. We keep the house at 68. Our front door also had to be readjusted a few weeks ago because we could not lock it, the holes no longer matched up. 1. Why is this happening? 2. Does the floor need to be ripped out? 3. Is it the builders responsibility to fix this? Help Thanks in advance
