Project Description: Our home was built as a summer cottage but has been upgraded over the past few years as a 3-4 season home. The location is on a saltwater cove on the Northumberland Strait at the mouth of Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia. Access is by a lane navigable by most delivery trucks. We are a 15 minute drive from New Glasgow. The house is 5 m from the lane, accessible by vehicle on the lane side but not the seaward side or the ends due to trees and an extension (which has a 7 year-old roof). The cottage was built in 1991 and roofed with tar shingles; no modifications have been made to the roof The shingles are beginning to show their age but as yet we have no leaking. The roof covers a 20x24 foot main structure and has a steep pitch. The estimated total roof area is 800 sq ft. The only obstructions on the roof are a small skylight and the bathroom vent. We are willing to look at alternatives to standard shingle, including steel, and would be interested in having the existing gutters and downspouts replaced as well as the roof, at the same time.
