The Latest Reviews for Contractors in Windsor

5 Star RatingColonial Renovations - located in Windsor
Review Posted by Darlene

We recently had renovation work done to our home by the owner Mike of Colonial Renovations. The renovations were very extensive which included two bedrooms and a family-room. The work in the bedrooms involved drywall, installing hardwood flooring, rebuilding stairs and also rebuilding a closet not to forget the detail he put into the trim. The detail work that Mike put into our family-room is unbelievably amazing. He completely renovated the familyroom from ceiling to floor and rebuilt the fireplace with stacked stone and built custom bookcases on each side of the fireplace. His workmanship he puts into every little detail shows itself in these rooms. The end renovations was above and beyond our expectations and we would highly recommend Colonial Renovations to anyone.

2.5 Star RatingOutback Creations Inc. - located in Windsor

This company, formerly known as Outback Creations Inc, has at least one judgement against them (mine, and it is unfulfilled) and has had several unsatisfactory commemts when they were a member of the BBB. The owner, did not stand behind his work and his work on my home, has been gone over by engineers and other professionals and found to be below the minimum provincial standards and not able to pass code. No, there was no work permit. Being this was the first time I hired any contractor, they led me to believe they were to get the permits. His side-kick, talks a lot , but when you investigate, you will find out he knows very little about what he is talking about with refrence to construction. Be very careful about anything they tell...more

Attic insulation
My home was built in the 1950's and I am planning on adding insulation to my attic. The previous owner had already added a layer of R20 and I am going to add another layer to bring it up to R40. On inspection I noticed that between the last joist and the outside wall on both ends of the house there is no insulation whatsoever. I can barely reach this area when lying on my side but I am able to push insulation batts into the spaces without blocking the ventilation, however there is not enough room to work on installing a vapour barrier. My question is, would I create a problem if I was to push the insulation in without a vapour barrier?

Thank you both for your input. I guess I would be better to bring it up to R50 at least. Thanks Jim for the info on the paint being a good vapor barrier in itself, my old house must have quite a few coats on over the years. John

How to deal with general contractors in bid stage?
Recently, I have secured a fund to renovate a professional office in a mall. Since I am isolated from the community for a quite while, I knew no one who involve contractors. So I mainly search them from yellow book and online resources. When I made several calls and brought them on the site, I had no idea how well they do. In other word, I am not able to distinguish them. The writing cannot explain fully here. My question is how many contractors I should see considering I am a newbie? How do I deal with contractors in a bid stage? Is it considered as an offense to ask business number and references in a bid stage because it is commercial site? When I ask if insured, they all answer yes. How do I verify them if they don't give me the evidence? In what stage, I should ask them to give me those evidence? It takes me a long time to consider those things and feel bothered. I hope someone here come to share experiences of dealing with contractors

Hi Pidy, You have excellent questions for the contractors and none of them should have trouble answering them. They can give you insurance letters, WCB clearance letters and references. A general rule is to get at least 3 prices for each scope of work. This will give you a good idea of the market value. Make sure you have the same conversation with all of them so that they all price the same thing. Make sure you take the time to call references and review the quotes for inclusions and exclusions. They can be sneaky. You can also request that they have a bond in place if the scope is expensive enough. If you aren't familiar with the process then you should consult a construction management company. Good luck. Jay
