I had Roch from this company in because the pan in the basement shower was cracked. I had previously had another company in who did repairs, but they declined doing it as that was all they did, and felt the pan was too far gone and would need to be replaced.
Roch gave an initial estimate of 3500, which I said was too high for me. He immediately countered at 2500 (should have been a hint to me ) - he would not have to replace the wall tiles but would put in a complete surround over the old tiles and area which had to removed because it was soft and the old tap, piping etc would be used.. So far so good. He came out and did the work. I went to pay him by cheque and he said it would be another 13% for HST if I did not pay in cash - we had not discussed any such thing.I did not test the shower as he said it had to seal for 24 hours. In future, I would wait the 24 hours before paying as I clearly lost any leverage then and there.
When the shower is used it drains but leaves a 1/4 of an inch of water in the pan.
I called and was told that he would have to take out the whole thing - and I would need pay for an entire new stall...I said that made no sense. He said that taking it out might damage the plastic panels on the wall and they couldn't be bought separately - which is untrue, I checked w/Home Depot and Rona. They sell the panels. He then said that he would have to bash out the concrete floor and replace it to make it level. So, we would be looking at least another 1000. We agreed on nothing. I called again and he said he would figure out how it could be fixed and would call again. He did not nor did he return my next call. I have had a professional come in who was enraged at the job. The licensed plumber, with solid references went over a litany of what was done wrong- is not screwed together properly, is not sealed properly and that Roch had lots of play room to work to angle the pan - nothing to do with the basement floor. Nothing has been done yet, but it will need to be corrected. The guy is a decent fellow and didn't want to criticize someone else's work - but was shocked by how badly it had been done.
I made a big mistake trusting this guy - usually my intuition is good about trusting people but it was not a good time for my brain working as I was dealing with him between my brother's death and funeral.
I discovered this guy in not licensed in Metro - though he lives in my neighborhood and works here. In a clearer state of mind I would have been more attentive to that. I want to advise everyone to stay away from this guy. I will be pursuing other aspects (lack of license etc with the appropriate authorities). Bad enough that he took advantage of me when I was not in great shape, even worse that he would add insult to injury but attempting to scam me again.
This guy is offering no solution to his bad work - not draining, areas not caulked, the unit not properly secured, the plate behind the water knob just placed on - not fixed in place or caulked.. It would have been nice if he manned up to his bad job and repaired it, instead he offered and absurd scenario that involved needless work and another at least thousand dollars. I guess he figures I was idiot enough to fall for it once and would do so again.
