Construction Company in Whitby, ON

We had a bad experience with Top Line Construction, even though we contacted references before we did the contract and were given great reviews of the company. They were late in getting the project started, lack of communication, always had excuses. The front step & walkway project contract was signed to start August 2010. Mid September they still did not have the project started and we suggested we should cancel the project and wait until the following spring to start. With that he came and dug up the walkway and we were told it would take 3 weeks to complete the project. Unfortunately the contractor did not spend much time at our project to meet his obligation of 3 weeks. With the walk way all dug up we couldn’t leave it as it was. The contractor kept promising to have it finished before the cold weather set in. As the colder weather set in then we were told he wasn’t able to finish it and the rest would have to wait until the Spring.

On April 18th we had a meeting with the contractor and he was to return on May 11th to finish the project. We were told then it would take a week to finish. Since that meeting we have not heard from him and he did not show up on May 11th to complete the job. We have sent several emails and tried phoning him but his phone was out of service. As a result we have had to find other contractors to give a quote to finish the job. I trust that others will not have to experience the problem we had this past year.

I am very pleased to find this contractor on this site while searching for another who can work ethically and responsibly.

I am looking to do work that did not get started by this contractor Lyle Brown. We met and worked out an agreement to build a deck on the back of my home and to do some finishing work inside the home. The work was to be done before I moved in with my son who suffers from allergies, one being dust. This contractor appeared professional and honest enough, worked out what seemed a fair quote. I gave him a downpayment of $5900.00 of which he cashed. About two months went by and I never heard from him. Timing was flexable but within reason. Finally after trying to contact him and having email and phone confrontations with him, I decided it was best not to deal with him as he has lack of professionalism, communication and honour of commitment. . At about the 3 months past inital agreement, upon ME contacting him, he said he would do the project but because of lack or communication, not showing up and taking the inital payment (he did not return my money) I did not want him on my project. I would not want other clients to experience this same situation.

I'm afraid we had a negative experience with Top Line Construction, despite the fact that we contacted 3 references who gave glowing reviews of the company. Perhaps we just had bad luck? In our experience, there was a severe lack of communication and multiple times that they did not show up to work when promised. A project that was contracted to be completed in 2 months was still in the early stages 4 months in, so we ended our contract. It seemed as if they had too many projects on the go, and we were not a priority. Unfortunately, the work that was completed is of a lower quality. Among this was a drain installed in an exterior cement entranceway, which does not actually drain water - and so every day for the past 2 weeks, we've had to pull buckets of water out. As a result, we will have to get the cement broken and the work redone. It's not our style to badmouth people, but we do want others to be cautious given the fact that we now have to spend more to get work redone. We'd hate to see others in the same predicament.
