Roofing Contractor in Edmonton, AB

I signed a contract with General Roofing Systems Canada to to a complete roof replacement on an apartment building in Edmonton in April of 2012. The contract was to remove the existing roof, re-sheath where necessary, apply solid insulation with a four ply engineered liquid rubber roof over it. The price of the roof replacement was to include, the parapet, flashing, parapet cap, edge/cant, and eave drip.

The terms of the agreement were 30% down payment, 40% midway, and balance due on completion. On June 15 Russ Brassor called and said the job was complete and final pmt was due. I told him that as per our agreement I would pay him once I had verification from my General Contractor that the job was complete.

The following morning my GC called and said that the roof was not complete, that flashing was not installed on the parapet sides, the cap and drip rails was not installed. When I called Russ Brassor he became very rude and threaten legal action.

I had to get another roofing company to come and finish the parapet, cap etc. They told me that the roof was not complete and recommended removing it and starting over. I called Regional Roof Inspections to come and give me a report on the roof. They confirmed that the roof was not complete. They called GRS, Russ Brassor and Curtis (the GRS foreman) to attend with them when the roof inspection was done. GRS did not return their phone calls.

True to the report, the roof was not done properly and has failed in three separate areas. The damage to five suites damaged by water because of the failure so far has totalled more than $75,000. I am currently in litigation with GRS and my lawyer tells me that it will be a lengthy battle.

I am and have been involved in apartment building management for many years and have never dealt with a company a bad as GRS Canada, they have a complete disregard for the quality of work they provide and their clients. They are nothing short of thieves. I have attached a few photos, one of them clearly shows a hole that was not repaired, another shows plywood behind the one ply NOT four ply liquid rubber roof that was supposed to be installed, lastly one show materials left behind on the lawn that they did not clean up after "completion" of the job

After almost 5 weeks of dealing with GRS Canada, they cancelled the signed contract that we had to shingle my home when they were unable to deliver

Sept 18 I contacted the general mailbox looking for a quote to shingle, and install fascia/soffit on a home I am building. I was in turn contacted and provided a quote by Geoff Cheung for the shingles only and was told the other quote would follow.

By Sept 30 I had heard nothing so I emailed Geoff again, as well as called requesting the second part of the quote.

October 1 with no email from Geoff I called GRS but was forced to leave a message with the call service as you cannot reach the company directly I asked for someone to call me back.

On October 3 I was contacted by Curtis and that Geoff was no longer with the company, and that he was the lead project manager and would personally handle my account from this point forward. I again mentioned that I was missing the second part of the quote and was told it would be sent to me.

Oct 4, reassured by Curtis that an adjusted quote was coming.

Oct 5, called asking for the quote, which was finally sent through that afternoon. I signed the quote attached payment information and returned it. With a request to be put into the schedule for install.

Oct 10 I had heard nothing in regards to an install date, so I again sent an email asking when the work would be done. Was told by Curtis that any day would probably work for them and I should let them know what was best for me. I replied that anytime between Oct 15-19 would be ideal.

By Oct 15 I had received no confirmation of an install date, so I again had to email Curtis, at which time I was told he had been out of the office but would look into it.

Oct 17 received a call saying that the material would be onsite either the 19 or 22 weather pending.

Oct 19 was a warm day with no wind so I expected the material to show up, when it did not I called Curtis to confirm whether it was going to be coming, I was told that it was not weather dependent after all and comes down to the suppliers delivery schedule but it would be there either Oct 19 and if not the 22.

Oct22, when no material showed up Friday and we had not seen anything by 3:00 on Monday the 22, I called asking for Curtis to let him know so he could contact the supplier. Curtis was busy so I was put through to Peggy (the owner) I explained my situation to Peggy and that I was trying to confirm the schedule for install so I could let the Fascia company know when they would be able to start. Peggy was extremely defensive and rude, rather than listening and trying to work out a solution her answer was to refund my deposit and tell me I had to find a new roofer. I explained I would like to use GRS as I had waited a number of weeks for them to do the install and to please check with scheduling and let me know when it could possibly be done.

received a call back 45 mins later from Curtis to be told that GRS would not be doing the work for "no apparent reason" and it was "their decision what jobs they took". my deposit was returned. But I am now left without a roofing company to install the shingles.

I want nothing to do with this company, my only objective was to let other people know what they could be getting into by dealing with GRS and save them from having to go through what I did.
