Bath Exhaust Fan

I have a Nutone exhaust fan model QTRN090C, 90 CFM 1 sone installed in the bath. I notice that the one side of the bracket (over which the grill is pushed to flush with the ceiling) has become loose since the screws have fallen off. As a result, there is a small gap on that side of the fan.

How do I go about fixing it and what is the screw size (I believe I will need two) to get at Home Depot. Novice at these. Thanks.

Hi San,
The metal housing for the fan is normally against a ceiling joist, this is not always the case. So the metal flange around the perimeter of the fan housing is sitting on top of the ceiling drywall.
Use the end of a wire coat hanger or other narrow item that fits through the original screw holes. If there is nothing stopping the wire, it means you have no backing to screw into.
First try a 1" Pan head robertson #10 metal screw. If that does not bite into the flange, You will see that the "grill" cover is recessed to cover the screw head height. The width of the recess is equal to the width of the metal flange your trying to screw into.
Go with a 1 1/2" self tapping metal screw #8, and stay within the flange width previously described 3/8" on center. Screw at the sides not the corners.
