I need recs for glue to be used on maple that will be finished natural (dries clear?).
Speaking of finishing, what clear satin-finish sealer(s) do you folks like over natural wood (in this case maple). I have no idea of what's out there water or solvent based. I'd prefer something with lower odor if possible. The project is a fireplace mantel. It'll be subject to indirect sunlight, maybe some water drips from watering a house plant. Thanks. |

Hi Brandon, there are probably glues out there that dry clear, but you'd be much better off using a quality carpenters glue and use a damp cloth/sponge to clean up the excess from joints as you go, wether just glueing/clamping or glueing/nailing. A light sand after everything has dried will remove any glue residue. Just remember, you don't have to overglue.
For finishing, I'm a big fan of 'Varathane' brands 'Diamond' finishes. Their water based, low odour, easy to clean, easy to use, less runs, etc. Usually white, dries clear. 1 drawback- you may need more coats than oil based varnishes, but dry times are much faster. Light sand between coats because the Diamond finish does not 'raise the grain' in woods as much as oil based finishes. Hope this helps. |

There are carpenters glues that dry clear. Both avalible @ home depot. I use on antique renos all the time. Varathane has a waterbased product I have had to use several times for clients childrens furniture. Love it. |
