Hello All,

I have squeaky hardwood floors. I purchased my home 2 years ago and had hardwood installed in most of the rooms because of my allergies.

Within a matter of months of moving in the hardwood started to squeak. Of course this was noted on my one year home warranty but was considered a non-warranted item. Therefore, we had to correct the problem ourselves.

From the basement we screwed up through the sub floor to secure down the hardwood - however, within a matter of 4 months the squeaks are returning. I should also note that we've provided extra floor joist supports and installed a humidifier. Hoping this would help resolve the problem.

Any suggestions on how we could resolve the squeaky floor issue would be welcomed.

Thank you

Beverly H.

If you can find the area that the sub floor is bouncing or not fully secured to your joists you may be able to cuts strips of plywood and PL glue and screw them to the joists also PL the top of the plywood strip that will be in contact with the hardwood. Most likely if this house was built in a sub division their was little to no sub floor adhesive used and was never screwed to the joists.

There's a few reason's why this might occur, Humidity, Temperature, and Nailing are all some typical sources.
More likely, being a newly built home, the developers cheaped out on using wider spacing on the floor joists. Coupled with a 5/8's OSB will give you plenty of deflection throughout the floor. This will cause the boards to shift against each other, and possibly ride the staples right out of the floor.
I've encountered this a many times over in floors.
The solution is to remove the floor, laminate the floor joists if necessary, possibly sheet over the floor surface, and reinstall the hardwood.

Also check to see if cleats were used on the OSB. This is not a recommended installation as the cleats break apart the strands in OSB weakening the floor.

Agree with above posts. squeeks are caused by wood rubbing on wood or sliding on nail(s). many times hardwood does not get installed using the correct fastners. If you want to check thickness of subfloor or underlay, you can remove a heat register (if there is one cut into the floor) and see exact thicknesses of each layer. Unfortunatly, the floor will always have this issue unless it is removed and reinstalled correctly. Sorry for no good news.Best of luck
